The XVIIIth century is the golden age of Neapolitan "crèches".

The nativity is at the centre of a dazzling production. The biblical figures: the Holy Family, the angels, the shepherds and the Magi are seen next to characters originating from the Neapolitan people. The serenity of the image of the Virgin and Child contrasts with a realism bordering on caricature that depicts these popular characters. The angels seem to have come straight out of the opera, whilst the picturesque and adorned procession of the Magi gives way to indulgence in a taste for orientalism.

 

Il XVIII secolo è l'epoca d'oro dei presepi napoletani.

La Natività è il centro di una magnifica rappresentazione scenografica. Le figure bibliche : la Santa Famiglia, gli angeli, i pastori e i Re Magi si mescolano a personaggi originari del popolo napoletano. La serenità della Vergine e del Bambino si oppone al realismo, a volte vicino alla caricatura, che caratterizza quei personaggi popolari.
Gli angeli sembrano tutti provenire direttamente dal teatro dell'Opera, mentre il corteo dei Re Magi, con i loro ornamenti vistosi e pittoreschi, offre l'occasione di esprimere il gusto per l'Orientalismo.
