Baron Tage Brockdorff-Vognsgaard, descended from an old noble danish family, put together, during long years, various items linked to the memory of Napoleon Ist and the Bonaparte lineage. The result of his passion is a fine miscellany with propaganda as a leitmotiv where sharp caricatures, showing Napoleon monster or puppet, are close to books, medals and prints dedicated to the imperial glory. When the Baron “went on a pilgrimage” to Ajaccio, he wanted to enrich the imperial patrimony of “the cradle of the Eagle” and, in 1974, he decided, of a common accord with his wife Baroness Tove Brockdorff-Vognsgaard, to give the city the main part of his collection. Thirty years later, parallel to the commemoration of the coronation of the Emperor, the Baroness completes the first donation with a new set of napoleonic items. Through this exhibition, the Fesch museum and the city of Ajaccio pay tribute to these generous donors. Here the splendours of the Empire give precedence to a well-advised collector’s intimate world.
